Sensory Integration (SI) Gym

A Sensory Integration (SI) gym is a therapeutic space designed to support individuals in improving sensory processing and integration. While the concept of sensory integration encompasses 8 sensory systems—vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, auditory, visual, gustatory, olfactory, and interoceptive , which helps individuals process and respond to sensory input in a more organized and adaptive way. The environment in an SI gym incorporates specialized equipment and activities tailored to engage and stimulate the three primary sensory systems:

  • Vestibular System (Balance and Movement):

The vestibular system helps regulate balance, spatial orientation, and movement. Activities are designed to help individuals develop better coordination, improve their posture, and gain a sense of stability in their movements.

  • Proprioceptive System (Body Awareness):

Proprioception refers to the sense of body position and movement through input from muscles and joints. These activities promote body awareness, motor planning, and a sense of physical grounding.

  • Tactile System (Touch):

The tactile system processes sensory information from touch, such as texture, pressure, and temperature. This can improve fine motor skills and reduce tactile defensiveness.

By engaging these three sensory systems in a controlled and playful environment, an SI gym helps individuals build sensory processing skills, improve their emotional regulation, and enhance their ability to interact with the world around them.
